The Reed Doctors are troubleshooters. When a reed plays up in rehearsal or concert, your Reed Doctor could get you out of trouble.
Also, with a little judicious "carpentry", you can revive your favourite reed - giving it a new lease of life.
All commercial reeds are made from blanks machined to a set pattern. In any box of ten clarinet or sax reeds, however, only one or two will play perfectly. Cane, being a natural substance, will vary whilst the machine's cut will not but with your Reed Doctor you can make the rest of your reeds work just as well.
